Various Proofs of the Divinity of Jesus Christ
Various Proofs of the Divinity of Jesus Christ
By Dan Curry

When showing cultists that Jesus is God, most people immediately turn to John 1:1.  But, this does not do much good when one realizes that each cult has their own different way of interpreting its meaning.  True, nothing could be clearer than "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God".  However, this is never enough for cultists to change their mind.  So, another tactic must be employed:  Syllogisms.  Here is an example of a valid syllogism:

God does not err
The Bible is God's word
Therefore, the Bible does not err

Here are some syllogistic proofs of the divinity of Jesus Christ.  They might not always be as clearly outlined as the above example, but they all follow the same general logic.  Expect this to be updated frequently.

1.  Jesus is the First and the Last, and the First and the Last is God.
Revelation 1:8
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
The Lord God is the Alpha and the Omega.
Revelation 1:18
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First (protos) and the Last (eschatos).
Jesus Christ is the First and the Last.
Revelation 2:8
"...These are the words of him who is the First (protos) and the Last (eschatos), who died and came to life again."
Jesus Christ is the First and the Last.
Revelation 22:13
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First (protos) and the Last (eschatos)..."
The Alpha and the Omega is the same as the First and the Last.  Therefore, Jesus Christ is the Lord God.

2.  Jesus is the one who treads the winepress, and the one who treads the winepress is God.
Isaiah 63: 1-4 (Speaking of YHWH):
Who is this coming from Edom,
from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson?
Who is this, robed in splendor,
striding forward in the greatness of his strength?
"It is I, speaking in righteousness,
    mighty to save."
Why are your garments red,
like those of one treading the winepress?
"I have trodden the winepress alone;
from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled them in my anger
    and trod them down in my wrath;
  their blood spattered my garments,
and I stained all my clothing.
For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and the year of my redemption has come.

Notice here that God says that He alone has trodden the winepress.

Revelation 19: 13-15 (speaking of Jesus):
He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.  The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.  Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

Notice here that it is Jesus Christ who treads the winepress.

If God alone treads the winepress, and Jesus Christ treads the winepress, Jesus is God.

3.  John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus, yet the Old Testament says he prepares the way for the LORD
Isaiah 40:3
    A voice of one calling:
  "In the desert prepare
    the way for the LORD;
  make straight in the wilderness
    a highway for our God.

John 1:23
John [the Baptist] replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, `Make straight the way for the Lord.' "

John the Baptist's ministry included being the forerunner of the Messiah.  John 1:7 says that John "came as a witness to testify concerning that light".  Christ, as we know, is the light of the world, as John 8:12 says "When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world'..."  Now notice that in Isaiah 40:3, it is said that the way would be made for YHWH.  This would be done by John the Baptist, seeing as he applied the verse to himself.  However, John came to make the way for Jesus.  This means that for the prophecy to be true, Jesus must be YHWH.  YHWH is God.  Therefore, Jesus is God.

4.  There is only one Gospel, yet it is called the "Gospel of Christ" and the "Gospel of God".
Paul says in Galatians 1:6-8 "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-- which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!"

Clearly, there is only one gospel, and that is the gospel of Christ.

However, we are told over and over that the gospel is the "Gospel of God" (Romans 1:1, Romans 15:16, 2 Corinthians 11:7, 1 Thessalonians 2:8, 9, 1 Peter 4:17).

Likewise, we are told repeatedly that the gospel is the "Gospel of Christ" (Romans 15:19, 1 Corinthians 9:12, 2 Corinthians 2:12, 2 Corinthians 9:13, 2 Corinthians 10:14, Galatians 1:7, Philippians 1:27, 1 Thessalonians 3:2)

Of particular interest is the following Scripture:

Romans 15:15-20
I have written you quite boldly on some points, as if to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God.  I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done--  by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.  It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation.

There is only one Gospel, yet in giving the Gospel a "title", the words "Christ" and "God" are used interchangeably.  Therefore, Jesus is God.

5.  We were bought by God with God's blood, and by Christ with Christ's blood.
Acts 20:28
...Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

Here it is said that it was God's own blood that purchased us.

Hebrews 13:12
And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.

Revelation 5:9
"You are worthy to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
  because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased men for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation.

Here it is said that it was Christ's own blood that purchased us.

We were bought by God's blood.  We were bought by Christ's blood.  Therefore, Jesus is God.
We were bought by God (Acts 20:28).  We were bought by Christ (Revelataion 5:9).  Therefore, Jesus is God.

6.  Jesus is the good shepherd, and the shepherd is God.
Psalms 23:1
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

God is the shepherd.

John 10:14
"I am the good shepherd..."

Jesus is the shepherd.  Therefore, Jesus is God.

7.  Jesus is the Lord of Lord and King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
1 Timothy 6:11-16
But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.  Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.  In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time--God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

Here, it is explicitly and undeniably stated that GOD is the "King of kings" and the "Lord of lords".

Revelation 17:14
They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings--and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers."

Here, it is explicitly and undeniably stated that Jesus Christ is the "King of kings" and the "Lord of lords".

Therefore, if God Himself is the "King of kings" and the "Lord of lords", and Christ Himself is the "King of kings" and the "Lord of lords", then Jesus is God.

8.  Christ is the stumbling stone, and the stumbling stone is God.
Romans 9:30-33
What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone." As it is written:

"See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall,
and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."

1 Peter 2:4-7
As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:

"See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,

"The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone, "

and,

"A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall."

Ask the person who denys the divinity of Christ to define who these passages (in bold) are speaking of.  If they say that the first passage is a reference to God, show them the 1 Peter passage and show them that Peter defines the rock as Christ.  Point this out by saying that the stone/rock in view here was "chosen by God".  Therefore, it must be someone distinct from God.  Once they affirm that the Apostles are applying these verses to Christ, point them back to the passage that the bold portions are taken from in the Old Testament:

Isaiah 8:13-14
The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,
he is the one you are to fear,
he is the one you are to dread,
and he will be a sanctuary;
but for both houses of Israel he will be
a stone that causes men to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
    a trap and a snare.

It is clear that here, it is the LORD Almighty (God) who is the (singular) "stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall."

However, the Apostles find no reason to not apply the verse in Isaiah to Christ.

If the LORD Almighty is the (singular) "stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall", and so is Jesus, then Jesus must be the LORD Almighty.

9.  Isaiah saw Jesus, and the one Isaiah saw was God.
John 12:39-41
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

40 "He has blinded their eyes
    and deadened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn--and I would heal them."

41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him.

Here, John quotes Isaiah 6:10

Isaiah 6:1-10
1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
  "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory."

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty."

6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"
And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

9 He said, "Go and tell this people:

  " `Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.'

  10 Make the heart of this people calloused;
    make their ears dull
    and close their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts,
  and turn and be healed."

John states that Isaiah spoke what God commanded him to because He saw Jesus' glory.  The Book of Isaiah, however, records that in Isaiah 6, Isaiah saw the glory of the LORD Almighty!  Therefore, Jesus is the LORD Almighty.

10.  Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved, and the Lord is Jesus.
Romans 10:5-13
5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, `Who will ascend into heaven?' " (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or `Who will descend into the deep?' " (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Here, Joel 2:32 is quoted, which says:

  And everyone who calls
    on the name of the LORD will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
    there will be deliverance,
    as the LORD has said,
  among the survivors
    whom the LORD calls.

Paul is clearly applying Romans 10:13 to Jesus, as is beyond clear from the context.  In other words, everyone who calls on the name of Jesus will be saved.  However, Paul is applying to Jesus here an Old Testament verse which is clearly about the LORD (YHWH).  Paul is clearly equating the name of Jesus with the name of YHWH.  Therefore, Jesus is God.  This leads to the conclusion that when Paul speaks of Jesus being Lord (at least in the direct context), "Lord" means "YHWH".  Therefore, Romans 10:9 means, "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is GOD', ... you will be saved".

The following identity comparisons are courtesy of James Titus (http://www.thewhyman.jesusanswers.com/index.html)

1.  Jesus laid the foundation and the One that laid the foundation was God.
Hebrews 1:10-13- (The Father speaking of Jesus) "You, God in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the Heavens are the works of your hands...But you are the same, and your years will not come to an end."
Here, the Father quotes from Psalm 102:25, in which the psalmist is speaking about God- YHWH: "Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens [are] the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed But thou [art] the same, and thy years shall have no end."

2.  Jesus is the "I AM" and the "I AM" is God.
Exodus 3:13-14- "And Moses said unto God, Behold, [when] I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What [is] his name? what shall I say unto them?
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."
John 8:58- "Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by." They knew their scriptures and so knew what Jesus was saying when he claimed to be I AM.

3.  Jesus is the Rock, and the Rock is God.
Isaiah 44:8- "Do not fear, nor be afraid; Have I not told you from that time, and declared it? You are My witnesses. Is there a God besides Me? Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.'"
God asks the question: 'Is there any God besides me?' then He answers it Himself with the statement: 'Indeed there is no other Rock; I know not one.'
So, from this we can know that there is only one Rock- and that Rock is God. For we can be assured that if God Himself knows not of any other Rock, then there is no other Rock to be known.
1 Corinthians 10:4- "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."

4.  Jesus is our Judge, Lawgiver, and King, and our Judge, Lawgiver, and King is God.
Isaiah 33:22- "YHWH is our judge, YHWH is our lawgiver, YHWH is our king. He will save us"
Jesus is our JUDGE (John 5:22) Jesus completes and fulfils the law (Matt. 5: 17-18)
Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev. 19: 16) (isn't there but ONE King of Kings and Lord of Lord..by its very definition?) Jesus is our Savior (Matt. 1 :21)

5.  Jesus walks the waves and He who walks the waves is God.
Job 9:8 speaking of God:  "Which ALONE spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea."
God ALONE walks upon the waves of the sea and yet we read in Matthew 14: 22-27:
"And when the disclipes saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, It is a ghost! and they screamed out with fright.
But instantly He spoke to them saying, 'Take courage! I AM! Stop being afraid.'"

6.  Jesus is the one husband, and the one husband is God.

Colossians 1:16- "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:"

14.  Jesus is the head, and the head is God.
Colossians 1:18- "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead;"
1Chronicles 29:11- "...thine [is] the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all."

15.  Jesus is the King of Israel, and the King of Israel is God.

Ecclesiasties 12:7- "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."

21.  Jesus is returning with the saints, and the one returning with the saints is God.
(Jesus at the Mount of Olives) "And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." (Acts 1: 9-11)

"Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee." (Zechariah 14: 3-5)

"And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean" (Revelation 19:13)

" Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints." (Revelation 19:8)
